# M425A - Payment Terminal

## Device Overview

The Verifone M425A is a new Multi-Lane, media-capable and consumer-facing device. M425A device's enriching features allow electronic payment transactions to be processed in multi-lane scenarios with combined card payment with a variety of Verifone cloud-based services including Advanced Payment Methods, e-comm capabilities such as Buy Online Pick-Up in Store, and the ability to dynamically configure multi-media driven promotional content at the counter.

This payment processing device can scan barcodes, QR codes, and products with the help of an integrated camera. In combination with Verifone Connect digital services, it offers the ability to run Android applications, like loyalty and inventory. It also enables clients to remotely monitor and update their devices using Verifone's estate management solution.

The best-in-class M425A device will be able to communicate to the ECR via serial over USB and IP over USB simultaneously and support multiple SAM cards for transaction processing. Verbal Message Supporter is a new significant feature where the user will be able to speak into the terminal microphone to state their issue or raise a question that will be received by the Verifone Support Administrator. It also supports video playback from a serial digital memory interface to play training videos for staff and promotional content to customers at or near the checkout counter or in the lane. It transforms the customer's journey into a simple walk-through by providing different connection options like an external power supply, USB, and Ethernet.

This document explains what is changing, what the new terminals can do, how they look and feel compared to what you have today, and how software updates are managed going forward. It is written for site operators, managers, and anyone who works with or beside these terminals -- not for technical or IT staff.

### Why Is Verifone Upgrading the Terminals?

The terminals used at many fuel sites today -- the MX915, MX925, and M400 -- are reaching the end of their supported life. The MX900-series devices reach end of service in 2026, and the M400 devices reach their payment card security expiry (PCI) in April 2026. Once a terminal passes its PCI expiry, it can no longer legally process card payments.

The M425A is built on Android and certified to the latest payment security standards (PCI PTS 6 and 7), which will remain valid for many years ahead. Moving to these devices now ensures sites can continue processing card payments without interruption.

### The Refreshed Payment Screen (EVPay UI)

The payment screen on the M425A has been completely redesigned based on direct feedback from cashiers and customers at fuel sites. The goal was to make it cleaner, easier to read at a glance, and less prone to accidental taps.

| What Changed | The Old Experience | The New Experience |
| --------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Button size and layout | Buttons stretched the full width of the screen. Customers found them hard to read and easy to tap accidentally. | Buttons are a more natural size -- easy to see and tap precisely, whether you have small or large hands. |
| Font size | Text on the PIN pad and payment prompts was small and difficult to read, especially in bright outdoor light. | Larger, clearer fonts throughout the payment flow -- easier to read for all customers. |
| Contactless icon placement | The contactless (tap) icon was placed where cards sometimes triggered it accidentally. | The contactless area is repositioned and clearly marked to reduce accidental triggers. |
| Scroll bars | Narrow scroll bars were difficult to grab and drag on a touchscreen. | Wider, more touch-friendly scroll bars -- and layouts are redesigned to minimise scrolling altogether. |
| Number of choices on screen | Limited options were visible at once, requiring multiple screen taps to complete a simple selection. | More choices visible at once, reducing the number of screens a customer taps through. |

{% hint style="info" %}
The payment process for customers is unchanged -- 1) tap, insert, or swipe card, 2) enter PIN if prompted, 3) confirm amount. Only the look and feel of the screen has improved.
{% endhint %}

### Customer Engagement Features

The M425A is not just a payment device. Its vibrant 5.5-inch touchscreen can be used to create richer checkout experiences for your customers -- without any extra hardware.

<table><thead><tr><th width="276.2222900390625">Feature</th><th>What It Means for Your Site</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Custom splash screens</td><td>Display your brand, promotions, or site-specific messages on the terminal screen when it is idle. Customers see your content while waiting to pay, not just a blank screen.</td></tr><tr><td>On-screen tipping</td><td>For sites that offer tipping (car washes, food service, etc.), tip prompts can be shown directly on the terminal screen. Customers select a tip amount before confirming payment -- no separate tip slip needed.</td></tr><tr><td>Loyalty programme recognition</td><td>The terminal can recognise returning loyalty customers and display personalised prompts -- for example, showing a customer their current points balance or a targeted reward offer as they pay.</td></tr><tr><td>Online specials and promotions</td><td>Promotional offers and digital specials can be displayed on the terminal at the point of payment -- encouraging add-on purchases or informing customers of current deals.</td></tr><tr><td>QR code &#x26; barcode scanning</td><td>Customers can scan digital coupons, loyalty barcodes, or QR codes directly from their smartphone screen. The terminal reads the code instantly -- no paper coupon needed.</td></tr><tr><td>Self-checkout support</td><td>The M425A can be used in a self-checkout configuration, giving customers the option to complete their own purchases during busy periods -- reducing queue time without additional staffing.</td></tr><tr><td>Alternative payment methods (APMs)</td><td>In addition to card payments, the terminal is designed to accept alternative payment methods -- such as digital wallets and any payment type configured by your Verifone deployment team.</td></tr><tr><td>Electronic document signing</td><td>Where required (for example, fuel delivery agreements or rental authorisations), customers can sign electronically on the terminal touchscreen -- no separate signature pad needed.</td></tr></tbody></table>

{% hint style="info" %}
Customer engagement features (loyalty, tipping, splash screens, QR scanning) are configured by your Verifone deployment team. Contact your Verifone account manager if you want to enable or customise these features for your site.

### Payment Types Accepted

| Payment Method | How the Customer Uses It | Notes |
| --------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Chip card (EMV) | Insert the card into the chip slot at the bottom of the terminal and follow on-screen prompts. | All major networks -- Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover. |
| Tap to pay (contactless / NFC) | Hold the card, phone, or watch near the contactless symbol. No PIN needed for most tap transactions. | Works with contactless cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, and all NFC-enabled devices. |
| Magnetic stripe (swipe) | Swipe the card through the card reader slot on the side of the terminal. | Fallback if the chip cannot be read. All card types supported. |
| Fleet cards | Insert or swipe the fleet card. Extra prompts (odometer, driver ID, etc.) may appear depending on the fleet programme. | Fleet prompts are controlled by Commander, not the terminal itself. |
| Debit with PIN | Insert or swipe the debit card. The customer enters their PIN on the physical keypad. | Fully supported. The keypad design shields the PIN from nearby view. |
| PIN bypass (signature debit) | Debit card used without PIN -- processed as a signature transaction. | Available where permitted by the payment network and site setup. |
| Digital wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc.) | Customer holds their phone or watch near the contactless reader. | All NFC-enabled digital wallets are supported. |
| QR / barcode loyalty or coupon | Customer opens loyalty app or coupon on their phone -- terminal scans the code directly from the screen. | No paper required. Works with most loyalty app barcodes and digital coupons. |

### How the Terminal Stays Up to Date

Unlike older terminals that required a technician visit or manual USB update to change the software, the M425A can receive software updates remotely -- either through Verifone's cloud management system or directly from Commander on-site.

#### Via VHQ (Verifone HeadQuarters) -- Cloud Updates

VHQ is Verifone's cloud-based device management platform. When a new version of EVPay or a configuration update is approved and ready, VHQ automatically pushes it to the terminal during a scheduled maintenance window -- typically overnight, outside of trading hours.

* Updates are applied automatically -- no action needed from the site operator or cashier.
* The terminal waits until it is idle (no payment in progress) before applying the update.
* After the update, the terminal restarts and returns to the payment screen ready for use.
* All terminals at a site can be managed and updated centrally without visiting each one individually.

#### Via Verifone Commander (On-Site, On-Demand)

For sites that want to check or update the terminal software on-site, Verifone Commander can also manage EVPay updates directly -- without needing cloud access or a VHQ workflow.

* From Commander's configuration screen, an operator can see which EVPay version is currently running on any connected M425A.
* If a newer approved version is available, an update can be triggered directly from Commander -- no technician visit required.
* The update does not interrupt an active payment transaction.

{% hint style="info" %}
For most sites, VHQ handles routine software updates automatically. The Commander on-demand update is an additional option for sites that prefer to manage updates themselves or need to apply an update immediately.
{% endhint %}

### PIN Protection Measures

Use the following techniques to provide effective screening of the PIN-entry keypad during the PIN-entry process. You can use these methods in combination, although in some cases a single method might suffice.

* Position the device in such a way as to block visual observation of the PIN-entry process so that it is angled in such a way that PIN spying is difficult.
* Install the PED on an adjustable stand that allows consumers to swivel the device sideways and/or tilt it forward/backward to a position that makes visual observation of the PIN-entry process difficult.
* Position in-store security cameras so that the PIN-entry keypad is not visible.
* This risk of shoulder-spying during PIN entry can be significantly reduced by installing the optional approved privacy shield.
* Verifone also recommends instructing the cardholder regarding safe PIN-entry or using the Privacy Shield for secure PIN entry by installing a Privacy Shield (optional).

#### General Care

Your device is a product of superior design and craftsmanship and should be treated with care. The following suggestions will help you protect your warranty coverage.

* Keep the device dry. Precipitation, humidity, and all types of liquids or moisture can contain minerals that will corrode electronic circuits. If your device does get wet, switch off the power, and allow the device to dry completely before replacing it.
* Do not use or store the device in dusty and dirty areas. Its moving parts and electronic components can be damaged.
* Do not store the device in hot areas. High temperatures can shorten the life of electronic devices, damage batteries, and warp or melt certain plastics.
* Do not store the device in cold areas. Moisture can form inside the device and damage electronic circuit boards when the device returns to its normal temperature.
* Do not drop, knock, or shake the device. Rough handling can break internal circuit boards and fine mechanics.
* Do not paint the device. Paint can clog the moving parts and prevent proper operation.
* Keep the device free from any small and loose items (such as paper clips, staples, or coins) that could accidentally get inside it through an opening, such as the SAM slots or the primary smart card reader slot.
* Do not attempt to open the device other than as instructed in this guide. This device has security features that protect it from tampering. For example, the file content will be deleted if the device's outer casing is opened.
* Do not use this device in any area with a potentially explosive atmosphere. Follow all signs and instructions. Potentially explosive atmospheres include areas where you would normally be advised to turn off your vehicle engine. Sparks in such areas could cause an explosion or fire resulting in bodily injury or even death.

These suggestions apply equally to your device, or any of its attachments or accessories. If your device is not working properly, take it to the nearest authorized service facility for servicing or replacement. For your safety, have this device serviced only by a Verifone-authorized service provider.

### Additional Safety Information

{% hint style="info" %}
NOTE: If using a commercially available cleaning card use ONLY an approved MSR cleaning card made specifically for POS MSR Card reader devices or Petroleum MSR card readers.
{% endhint %}

## Software Installation

EVPay software comes pre-installed on the M425A from the factory. However, a setup visit is still required to configure the terminal for your specific site. A Verifone technician or your designated setup contact handles all of the following steps -- you do not need to perform them yourself, but this overview helps you know what to expect during an installation.

<table data-header-hidden><thead><tr><th width="83.4444580078125"></th><th width="224.7777099609375"></th><th width="384.2222900390625"></th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>1</td><td>Operating system is confirmed / updated</td><td>The terminal arrives with the correct Android OS pre-installed. The technician confirms the version is correct for your site type (production) and applies any OS updates if needed.</td></tr><tr><td>2</td><td>Network is configured</td><td>The terminal is set up with the correct network address (IP, gateway, DNS) so it can communicate with the Commander site controller over your local network. This can be done over Wi-Fi or via an Ethernet cable.</td></tr><tr><td>3</td><td>Identity certificate is loaded</td><td>A digital identity certificate is installed. This acts as the terminal's badge -- it tells Verifone's systems which organisation this terminal belongs to. Without it, the terminal cannot connect to the payment backend.</td></tr><tr><td>4</td><td>Encryption keys are loaded</td><td>For debit PIN transactions, encryption keys are loaded onto the terminal remotely and securely via the TR34 standard. These keys are unique to this terminal and are never typed or entered manually.</td></tr><tr><td>5</td><td>VHQ connection is configured</td><td>The terminal is pointed to the correct VHQ instance so it can receive future automatic software updates. By default, petroleum terminals connect to Verifone's PetroHome VHQ instance.</td></tr><tr><td>6</td><td>Configuration is applied from Commander</td><td>Terminal configuration (payment settings, prompts, fleet parameters, etc.) is applied from Commander's configuration client -- the same configuration process used with previous Verifone pinpads.</td></tr><tr><td>7</td><td>Test transactions are completed</td><td>The technician runs test payments -- chip, tap, swipe, and debit PIN -- to confirm everything works correctly with Commander and the payment network before the terminal goes live.</td></tr></tbody></table>

{% hint style="warning" %}
If a terminal is replaced or swapped, the full setup process above must be completed for the new unit. A replacement terminal arrives factory-fresh -- it does not inherit settings, certificates, or encryption keys from the old device.
{% endhint %}

## Day-to-Day Operation for Cashiers

Once the terminal is set up, day-to-day operation is the same as before. Customers follow the on-screen prompts -- the steps to pay are unchanged. The screen looks cleaner and is easier to read, but no retraining is needed.

<table><thead><tr><th width="334">Situation</th><th>What to Do</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Customer paying at the pump</td><td>No cashier action needed. The customer follows on-screen prompts -- tap, insert, or swipe their card and enter PIN if prompted.</td></tr><tr><td>Customer paying at the indoor POS</td><td>Process the transaction at the POS as normal. The M425A prompt will appear for the customer to present their card.</td></tr><tr><td>Customer wants to scan a loyalty barcode or digital coupon</td><td>Ask the customer to open their loyalty app or coupon on their phone and hold it near the terminal screen. The scanner reads the code automatically.</td></tr><tr><td>Terminal shows 'Out of Service' or is unresponsive</td><td>Check that the terminal is powered on and connected to the network. If the issue persists, contact your Verifone support. Do not reset or reconfigure the terminal yourself.</td></tr><tr><td>Terminal is applying a software update</td><td>A message will appear on screen. Do not power off the terminal during an update. It returns to the payment screen automatically when done.</td></tr><tr><td>Customer's card is declined</td><td>The decline comes from the customer's bank, not the terminal. Ask the customer to try a different card or payment method.</td></tr></tbody></table>

### **Using Smart Card Reader**

The smart card transaction procedure can vary depending on the application. Verify the proper procedure with your application provider before performing a smart card transaction.

#### Performing a Smart Card Transaction

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Position the smart card with the gold contacts facing upward.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Insert the card into the smart card reader slot in a smooth, continuous motion until it seats firmly.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Remove the card when the display indicates the transaction is completed.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### Using Magnetic Stripe Card Reader

The Verifone M425A has a magnetic card reader that uses a triple track stripe reader. This gives the unit greater reliability over a wide range of swipe speeds and operating environments.

#### Performing a Credit/Debit Card Transaction

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Position a magnetic card with the stripe facing the keypad.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Swipe it through the magnetic card reader.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### Using Contactless

The Verifone M425A supports contactless transactions through an integrated contactless module. The terminal only becomes active for contactless smart card transactions when initialized by an application.

#### Performing a Contactless Transaction

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Gently tap the card onto or hold the card (within 1-2") against the surface of the display where the contactless logo appears.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
An activated LED visual on the display accompanied by a short beeping sound indicates a successful transaction.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### Signature Capture

The Signature Capture electronically captures a signature when required for a network sale. See the Signature Capture Feature Reference on the Premier Portal for more information.

* When a card is used and a signature is required, the customer is prompted for a signature on the Verifone M425A PINpad.
* The printed receipt does not include a signature line, but depending on the configuration settings, may include the signature image.
* Signature Capture saves receipt paper by allowing the cashier to decide whether or not to print a merchant and customer copy.
* Signature Capture only applies when a signature is required.

## Frequently Asked Questions

<details>

<summary><strong>Do I need to do anything differently when a customer uses the new terminal?</strong></summary>

No. The payment steps for customers are identical. The screen looks cleaner and is easier to read, but customers follow the same prompts -- tap, insert, or swipe their card and enter PIN if prompted. No retraining is needed.

</details>

<details>

<summary><strong>Will the terminal accept all the cards my customers use today?</strong></summary>

Yes. The M450A and M425A accept chip cards, contactless tap (including Apple Pay and Google Pay), magnetic stripe swipe, fleet cards, debit PIN, and PIN bypass. All payment types in use today are fully supported.

</details>

<details>

<summary><strong>Can customers scan their loyalty app or digital coupons?</strong></summary>

Yes. The terminal has a built-in scanner that reads QR codes, barcodes, and PCR codes directly from a customer's phone screen -- no paper coupon needed. Ask the customer to open their loyalty app or coupon and hold it near the terminal.

</details>

<details>

<summary><strong>How will I know if the terminal is receiving a software update?</strong></summary>

The terminal may display a brief notification during an update. Do not power off the terminal during this time. Updates complete automatically and the terminal returns to the payment screen when done.

</details>

<details>

<summary><strong>Does the terminal support Apple Pay and Google Pay?</strong></summary>

Yes. The M425A / M450A fully supports all NFC contactless payments -- Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, and other digital wallets. Customers hold their phone or watch near the contactless symbol on the screen.

</details>

<details>

<summary><strong>Will we need to reconfigure Commander when the terminals are replaced?</strong></summary>

No. Commander configuration for payment settings remains the same as with your previous Verifone pinpads. The configuration client works in the same way -- your existing Commander configuration does not need to be rebuilt.

</details>

<details>

<summary><strong>What if the terminal shows an error code I do not recognise?</strong></summary>

Note the error message shown on screen and contact your Verifone support line. Take a photo with your phone if possible. Do not attempt to reset or reconfigure the terminal yourself -- error codes require trained support staff to diagnose.

</details>

<details>

<summary><strong>Is the terminal safe from tampering?</strong></summary>

Yes. The terminal is fitted with tamper-evident labels and built-in tamper detection. If someone attempts to physically open or interfere with the device, it disables itself automatically. It contains no user-serviceable parts -- do not attempt to open it.

</details>

<details>

<summary><strong>Do I need to do anything when the terminal restarts after an update?</strong></summary>

No. The terminal restarts automatically after an update and returns to the payment screen on its own. If a customer was in the middle of a payment, the update waits until the transaction is complete before applying.

</details>

<details>

<summary><strong>What happens to my existing M400 or MX900 terminals?</strong></summary>

They are replaced with M450A or M425A terminals as part of your site's upgrade. Old terminals are decommissioned after the new ones are installed and tested. Your Verifone account manager can give you the timeline for your specific site.

Ensure that the power supply used to power the unit matches the requirements specified on the back of the unit (see Specifications for detailed power supply specifications) before troubleshooting. If not, obtain the appropriately rated power supply before continuing with troubleshooting.

### Device Does Not Start

If the device does not start:

* Ensure that the device is plugged into a dedicated power source.
* Check power cable connector is plugged in properly.

### Device Display Does Not Show Correct/Readable Info

If the device display does not show correct/readable info:

* Check all cable connections. If the problem persists, contact your local Verifone representative for assistance.

### Blank Display

When the device display is blank:

* If the device display is dark, tap the screen with the stylus or your finger. If the unit was in screen-saver mode, the screen will turn on when touched.
* If the display does not show correct or readable information, check all cable connections. If the problem persists, contact your local Verifone representative for assistance.

### Keypad Does Not Respond

If the keypad does not respond properly:

* Check the device display. If it displays the wrong character or nothing at all when you press a key, follow the steps outlined in Transactions Fail to Process.
* Refer to the user documentation for that application if pressing a function key does not perform the expected action to ensure you are entering data correctly.
* Contact your local Verifone representative if the problem persists.

### Transactions Fail to Process

There are several possible reasons why the unit may not be processing transactions. Use the following steps to troubleshoot failures.

#### Checking Magnetic Card Reader

To check magnetic card reader:

1. Perform a test transaction using one or more different magnetic stripe cards to ensure the problem is not a defective card.
2. Ensure that you are swiping cards properly (see Magnetic Card Reader).
3. Process a transaction manually using the keypad instead of the card reader. If the manual transaction works, the problem may be a defective card reader.
4. Contact your local Verifone representative if the problem persists.

#### Checking Smart Card Reader

To check smart card reader:

1. Perform a test transaction using several different smart cards to ensure the problem is not a defective card.
2. Ensure that the card is inserted correctly (see Smart Card Reader).
3. Ensure the MSAM cards are properly inserted in the slots and are properly secured (see MSAM Card).
4. Contact your local Verifone representative if the problem persists.

The following steps cover the most common issues a cashier or site manager might notice. For anything beyond these basics -- or if the issue persists after following the steps below -- contact your Verifone support representative.

The M450A / M425A contains no user-serviceable parts. Do not attempt to open or disassemble the terminal under any circumstances. The device is fitted with tamper-evident labels -- physical tampering will disable the terminal and void any warranty. Only authorised Verifone service personnel may service the hardware.

| Terminal does not power on | Confirm the power cable is plugged in firmly at both ends. Ensure the terminal is connected to a dedicated power outlet -- not a shared power strip with other equipment. | Contact your Verifone support line. Do not attempt to open or repair the unit. |
| Screen is blank or dark | Tap the screen with your finger -- if the terminal was in screen-saver mode, the screen will turn on when touched. Check that the power cable is connected. | Check all cable connections. If the screen remains blank after touching, contact Verifone support. |
| Screen shows incorrect or unreadable information | Check all cable connections. Restart the terminal by holding the power button (if available) for a few seconds. | Contact Verifone support -- do not attempt to reconfigure the terminal yourself. |
| Keypad does not respond | Check whether the on-screen display shows the correct prompts. Try a different function or step in the payment flow. | If pressing keys produces no response or wrong characters, call Verifone support. |
| Card transactions failing -- chip read errors | Try a different chip card to confirm it is not a damaged card. Ensure the customer is inserting the card correctly (chip end first, face up). Try a second or third card. | If multiple different cards also fail, the chip reader may be faulty. Contact Verifone support. |
| Card transactions failing -- magnetic stripe | Try a different card. Ensure the customer is swiping smoothly in one direction at an even speed. Try swiping the card the other way. | If multiple cards fail to swipe, the magnetic card reader may be faulty. Contact Verifone support. |
| Tap to pay not working | Ensure the customer is holding their card or phone within 2-4 cm of the contactless symbol on the screen. Ask the customer to unlock their phone or open their wallet app before tapping. | If tap payments consistently fail with multiple cards/phones, contact Verifone support. |
| Terminal not connecting to network | Check that the Ethernet cable is plugged in (if using a wired connection) or that the terminal is within Wi-Fi range. Confirm the network is active. | Contact your Verifone support line -- network configuration issues require trained staff to diagnose. |

{% hint style="info" %}
When calling Verifone support, have the terminal serial number ready. It is printed on a label on the back of the terminal. The support team may also ask for the error message shown on screen -- take a photo with your phone before calling if possible.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.verifone.com/feature-references/features-and-products-references/m425a-payment-terminal.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
