# DCR and Dispenser Firmware Explained

## WHAT ARE DCR AND DISPENSER SOFTWARE/FIRMWARE?

Software and firmware are used and required in most electronic devices today. Both software and firmware are used to tell certain components what tasks to perform and how to perform them. Inside each dispenser, no matter the brand, there are different components such as the dispenser card readers (DCRs) and other boards that utilize software/firmware to control fuel and DCR functions, communication baud rates, blend ratios, decimal point conversions, and plugins for Speedpass, contactless, barcode scanners, printers, etc.

**What versions should be installed on the DCR and dispenser software/firmware?**\
DCR and dispenser software/firmware versions for specific Verifone software applications can be located in the Release Notes of each application in the **Fuel Hardware Peripheral’s supported** section.

Release Notes can be found here: <a href="https://commanderhelp.verifone.com/customer-documentation/petro/petroleum-and-c-store-customer-documentation/commander-and-integrated-pos/commander-release-notes" class="button primary">Verifone Commander Release Notes</a>

The version listed in the release notes is the minimum recommended version tested by Verifone and future updates from the dispenser manufacturers may not be represented in the release notes.

Upgrading an application may require that the DCR and dispenser software/firmware versions be upgraded as well.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Software/firmware for the dispensers and DCRs should only be upgraded by an authorized service provider who is certified on that equipment.
{% endhint %}

## WHY KEEP DCR AND DISPENSER SOFTWARE/FIRMWARE UP-TO-DATE?

Since the software/firmware in the dispenser and DCR are used to communicate between the fueling position and the point-of-sale, it is important to keep them up to date. Newer versions contain the latest features and fixes. Without staying up-to-date, issues can arise such as missed credit transactions or prompting issues that can cause significant problems with the network and fueling.
