# Terminal Setup (Out of Box)

Activate your new P400 for the first time using the Device ID from your order confirmation email.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Use this when** you're starting up your P400 for the first time and it asks for activation.
{% endhint %}

When you start your terminal for the first time, it asks to be activated with its **Device ID** (also called Terminal ID).

Your P400 can connect to your network with a **network (Ethernet/LAN) cable** or **Wi-Fi**.

## Before you start

{% hint style="warning" %}

* Connect the terminal to power and your network — see [How to Connect the Cables](/support-nordics/p400-integrated/how-tos/how-to-connect-the-cables.md) (network cable) or [How to Set Up Wi-Fi](/support-nordics/p400-integrated/how-tos/how-to-set-up-wi-fi.md) (Wi-Fi).
* Have your **order confirmation email** from Verifone ready. It contains your terminal's **Device ID**.
* The terminal's **serial number** is on its underside — see [How to Locate the Serial Number](/support-nordics/p400-integrated/how-tos/how-to-locate-the-serial-number.md).
  {% endhint %}

## Activate the terminal

### Answer the network question

When the terminal asks **"Do you wish to configure network?"**:

* If the terminal is connected with a **network (Ethernet/LAN) cable**, we recommend pressing the **green tick (✓)** so you can check that **LAN** shows as **UP**.
* If you're using **Wi-Fi**, press the **green tick (✓)** and set up your Wi-Fi — see [How to Set Up Wi-Fi](/support-nordics/p400-integrated/how-tos/how-to-set-up-wi-fi.md).
* If you need special network settings, <mark style="color:red;">contact Verifone Support</mark>.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Enter the Device ID

Enter the **Device ID** from your order confirmation email, then press the **green button**.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Wait about 15 minutes

Leave the terminal **untouched for about 15 minutes**. It'll automatically download its settings and restart.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Connect the terminal to your till system

Once the terminal has restarted, connect it to your till system (ECR) — see [How to Connect the Terminal to the ECR](/support-nordics/p400-integrated/how-tos/how-to-connect-the-terminal-to-the-ecr.md).
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.verifone.com/support-nordics/p400-integrated/how-tos/terminal-setup-out-of-box.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
