# How to Assign a Static IP Address

Set a fixed (static) IP address on your P400 Two-Piece operator unit.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Use this when** your network needs your terminal to use a fixed (static) IP address, instead of one it picks up automatically.
{% endhint %}

You only need to set a static IP address on the **operator unit (V400c)** — the unit at the till.

{% hint style="success" %}
**Why use a static IP address?** A static IP address is a good solution if your two units often lose connection with each other and you find yourself re-entering the operator unit's IP address on the customer unit.

Without a static IP address, your router can give the terminal a new IP address — for example, after a power cut or when the router's IP address lease runs out. A static IP address stays the same, so your units stay connected.
{% endhint %}

## Before you start

{% hint style="warning" %}
You'll need these details for your network:

* **IP address** — the fixed address you want the terminal to use.
* **Subnet mask**
* **Gateway IP address**

The subnet mask and gateway are usually the **same as your till computer's**. If you're not sure, ask your IT or network provider.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="info" %}
**How to enter addresses:** each part of the address must have **3 digits**, and you don't type the dots. For example, **192.168.1.10** is entered as **192 168 001 010**.
{% endhint %}

## Set a static IP address

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open the communication settings

1. On the operator unit, press **#**. No password is needed.
2. Select **Administration > Settings > Communication**.
   {% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Turn off automatic IP

1. Tap **LAN**, then **Configuration**, then **IPv4**.
2. Tap **DHCP** and select **No**.
   {% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Enter your network details

Tap each option below, enter the address, then press the **green button**:

1. **IP Address** — your terminal's fixed IP address.
2. **Subnet Mask**
3. **Gateway IP Address**
4. **DNS 1** — enter the **same address as your Gateway**.
5. **DNS 2** — enter `001.001.001.001`.
   {% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Save the settings

1. Tap the **"<"** icon in the top-left corner (next to "IPv4").
2. Tap the **Save** icon in the bottom-right corner, then tap **OK**.
3. When asked **"Apply settings on interface?"**, tap **Yes**, then tap **OK**.
4. Press the **red button** until you're back on the start screen.
   {% endstep %}
   {% endstepper %}

{% hint style="success" %}
**Check it worked:** see [How to Check the Network Information](/support-nordics/p400-two-piece-sa/how-tos/how-to-check-the-network-information.md). The terminal should show your new IP address and **UP**.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.verifone.com/support-nordics/p400-two-piece-sa/how-tos/how-to-assign-a-static-ip-address.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
