# Terminal Setup (Out of Box)

Activate your new P400 Two-Piece for the first time using the Device IDs from your order confirmation email.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Use this when** you're starting up your P400 Two-Piece for the first time and it asks for activation.
{% endhint %}

When you start your terminals for the first time, each unit asks to be activated with its own **Device ID** (also called Terminal ID).

## Before you start

{% hint style="warning" %}

* Connect both units to power and your network — see [How to Connect the Cables](/support-nordics/p400-two-piece-sa/how-tos/how-to-connect-the-cables.md).
* Have your **order confirmation email** from Verifone ready. It contains **two Device IDs** — one for each unit.
* Make sure you enter the **right Device ID for the right unit**. Each unit's **serial number** is on its underside.
  {% endhint %}

## Activate the terminals

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Answer the network question

When the terminal asks **"Do you wish to configure network?"**, press the **green tick (✓)**. This opens the network panel, so you can check the unit is connected.

If you need special network settings, <mark style="color:red;">contact Verifone Support</mark>.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Check the connection is UP

* **Using a network (Ethernet/LAN) cable:** check that **LAN** shows as **UP**.
* **Can't use a network cable?** Connect the unit to **Wi-Fi** instead — see [How to Set Up Wi-Fi](/support-nordics/p400-two-piece-sa/how-tos/how-to-set-up-wi-fi.md). Then check that **Wi-Fi** shows as **UP**.

{% hint style="info" %}
If neither **LAN** nor **Wi-Fi** shows as **UP**, check the cables are connected properly, or <mark style="color:red;">contact Verifone Support</mark>.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Leave the network panel

Once the connection shows as **UP**, press the **red button** to leave the network panel. The terminal moves on to the Device ID screen.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Enter the Device ID

Enter the **Device ID** for this unit from your order confirmation email, then press the **green button**.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Repeat on the other unit

Repeat Steps 1 to 4 on the other unit, using its **own Device ID**. The operator unit and customer unit each have a different Device ID.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Wait about 15 minutes

Leave both units **untouched for about 15 minutes**. They'll automatically download their settings and restart.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Connect the two units together

Once both units have restarted, connect them to each other — see [How to Connect the Devices Together](/support-nordics/p400-two-piece-sa/how-tos/how-to-connect-the-devices-together.md).
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.verifone.com/support-nordics/p400-two-piece-sa/how-tos/terminal-setup-out-of-box.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
