# Not Detecting Inserted Cards

The V200C isn't reading inserted (chip) cards but still accepts contactless — the chip reader may be dirty or damaged.

</details>

## Symptoms

You may see:

* Inserted (chip) cards aren't detected, but contactless payments still work.

**Most likely cause:** the chip reader is dirty or damaged.

## Resolution

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Power off the terminal

Hold down the red `X` button until the device turns off.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Mark for a configuration update

Log in to Webcom and mark the terminal for a default [configuration update](https://helpcenter.verifone.com/webcom-tms/terminals/configuration-update).
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Clean the chip reader

* Take a card (ideally a debit/credit card with raised numbers).
* Insert it upside down and back to front, so the chip is *not* in the reader.
* Remove and reinsert the card 10 times, wiggling it each time to dislodge dirt inside the reader.
  {% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Power on the terminal

Hold down the green button until the device turns back on.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Perform a test transaction

Try a test transaction to confirm the chip reader is working.

✅ **Chip reads correctly — stop here.** ❌ **Still not reading — see below.**
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Still not working?

If the chip reader still isn't working, it may be damaged and the terminal may need replacing.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.verifone.com/support-uk/v200c/errors/not-detecting-inserted-cards.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
