# Comm Error

This section covers if you receive a "Comm Error" error message on the device.

**Use this when** an Engage device shows a "Comm Error" or "Communication Error" message.

## Symptoms

* "Comm Error" or "Communication Error" displays on an Engage device.

**Most likely cause:** a failed connection between the device, the internet, or the POS — not a sign the device itself is faulty. This can be caused by an internet outage, a faulty or disconnected cable, an IP address mismatch, or incorrect device settings, among others.

## Resolve the issue

### Check the cables

Verify all cables — including Ethernet cables — are securely seated. If any are loose, unplug and reseat them firmly.

### Verify the internet connection

Confirm there's no internet outage, the signal is strong, and there are no red lights on the router.

Hold the red **X** button until a prompt appears, then select **Reboot**.
