# Resetting a POS Device

Reset a POS device in the Store Portal's Device Master and re-register it.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Use this when** a device shows as Active (Green Node) in Device Master when it shouldn't, a device add/remove request has just completed, or as part of a device-recovery process that needs a preamble file sent.
{% endhint %}

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Log in to the Store Portal

Log in to the PAYware Connect Store Portal.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Go to Device Master

Navigate to Device Master.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Locate the device

Locate the device by its serial number.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Reset the device

Select the device, then perform the Reset action.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Re-register the device

After the reset completes, the device must be treated as a new activation. Send an Admin Packet to retrieve a new Device Key — see "What happens after the reset," below.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### What happens after the reset

Resetting the device from Device Master requires an Admin packet to be sent as if it were a first Admin packet. For a first-time activation or after a reset, the POS sends a setup request similar to:

```xml
<TRANSACTION>
 <SERIAL_NUM>DeviceSerialNumber</SERIAL_NUM>
 <DEVTYPE>POSAPP</DEVTYPE>
 <DEVICEKEY></DEVICEKEY>
 <COMMAND>SETUP_REQUEST_V6</COMMAND>
 <FUNCTION_TYPE>ADMIN</FUNCTION_TYPE>
</TRANSACTION>
```

PAYware Connect then returns the `CLIENT_ID` and a new `DEVICEKEY`, which the POS application must store before transactions can resume.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.verifone.com/support-us/payware-connect/device-management/store-portal-device-master/resetting-a-pos-device.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
