# Hierarchies

Review the hierarchy tree, select a node, and start the right node action.

Use **Hierarchies** to view the organization tree and manage node-level actions.

### What hierarchies control

Use hierarchies to:

* place devices under the correct business node
* control node-level visibility and ownership
* manage users at a specific node

### Before you start

Confirm that:

* you know which node you want to review or change
* you have permission to manage hierarchy nodes
* you know whether you need to add, edit, delete, or assign users

Prepare these values when you will add a new node:

* **Name**
* **Entity Type**

### Open Hierarchies

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### 1. Open the hierarchy tree

Go to **Verifone Central** → **Device Management** → **Hierarchy/Group Management** → **Hierarchies**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### 2. Review the tree

Scan the tree and locate the root or child node you want to manage.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### 3. Select the target node

Select the node before you open any action.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### Open the Actions menu

Select **Actions** to open the available node operations.

### Available hierarchy actions

From **Actions**, you can:

* **Extend Node** — add a child hierarchy
* **Extend Root** — add a top-level hierarchy
* **Edit Node** — update hierarchy details
* **Remove Node** — delete the selected hierarchy

{% hint style="info" %}
New hierarchies require at least **Name** and **Entity Type**.
{% endhint %}

### Choose the right action

Use these quick rules:

* use **Extend Node** when the new hierarchy belongs under an existing parent
* use **Extend Root** when the new hierarchy should start at the top level
* use **Edit Node** when the node stays in place but its details need to change

### Manage users at a node

Use [Hierarchy - user management](https://verifone.gitbook.io/us-core-help-center/verifone-central/verifone-central/devices/manage-hierarchies-and-groups/hierarchy-user-management) to view, add, or unassign users for a selected node.

Use node-level user management when access should follow a specific branch of the tree.

### Validate the selected node

Before you run an action, confirm:

* the highlighted node is the one you intend to change
* the node level matches your target scope
* the action matches the outcome you want

If the wrong node is selected, return to the tree before you continue.

### Next steps

* [Configure hierarchies](https://verifone.gitbook.io/us-core-help-center/verifone-central/verifone-central/devices/manage-hierarchies-and-groups/configure-hierarchies) — choose the correct node action
* [Add a child hierarchy](https://verifone.gitbook.io/us-core-help-center/verifone-central/verifone-central/devices/manage-hierarchies-and-groups/add-a-child-hierarchy) — add a node below the current parent

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.verifone.com/verifone-central-getting-started/verifone-central/verifone-central-device-manager/devices/manage-hierarchies-and-groups/hierarchies.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
